Howdy Y'all! In the middle of Texas Hill Country is the old town of Bandera : the "Cowboy Capital of the World". A home to real cowboys since 1853 right upto the current day - you can see cowboys on longhorn cows and horses outside the saloons most days! Bandera has saloons, diners, bars and shops offering a whole range of western goods and clothing.

A typical Bandera scene - even today the ranch hands and cowboys ride into town in the evening to relax in their favourite saloon, and leave their horse tied up to the rail outside, as they always have. It's a way of life - not just for show or the movies...

Bandera has a rich cultural history, including some the largest cattle drives the world ever saw, many bloody battles between the Spanish Conquistadores and both the Apache and Comanche Indians, followed by even more culture added by settlers from Europe being among some of the first to start the town in 1853.

OST (which stands for 'Old Spanish Trail') is a favourite diner opened in 1921 that feels straight out the old days. Their world famous saddle bar, with western saddles mounted on stools, provides constant fun for the travellers who straddle a saddle for a beer and some food at this old bar.

The whole place immediately transports you to a late 1950's black-and-white cowboy film atmosphere, though this is the real deal. They have a huge wall dedicated to John Wayne photos and memorabilia from all eras, a salad bar which is a prairie wagon and all the beers Texan and Mexican foods and menus you could wish for. True cowboy style and deep south character can always be found at the OST.

Several times a year there are cattle drives and cowboy re-enactment scenes, gun battles and experience days. Most days of the year you can see a cowboy or two seated on the enormous longhorn cow that symbolises Texas.

The longhorn cattle are utterly huge in stature in every way - with more muscle and bone - and longer horns of course - than any other breed. They really are a sight to behold; as is how the cowboys manage these majestic beasts with such skill.
